Just after the Birmingham show it came out that U2 were going to play a Stop Sellafield gig in Manchester on 19th June. Around this time there was a lot of protest against the commissioning of the THORP plant at Sellafield nuclear station in my home county of Cumbria. In fact I live only about 70 miles away from the plant and have never been happy about being on its doorstep. Ireland, being just on the other side of the Irish Sea was very vociferous in it's protests and one of U2's ways of showing how they felt was to join with Greenpeace for the Stop Sellafield concert.
It was indeed exciting to think U2 were coming to Cumbria. Jane and I decided that we could not manage to attend the concert as we were in Glasgow for a show the day before and it just would not be feasible to get from Glasgow to Manchester for the gig. But we did decide that we would go to Sellafield on the 20th June when there was going to be a protest which it was rumoured U2 would attend.
